PLK Zombies blunt Black Arrow to take title

Monday, June 29, 2009
PLK ZOMBIES SOFTBALL CLUB won the 2009 MB Invitational Cup after beating Black Arrow 9-2 in the men's final at the Royal Brunei Polo Club field in Jerudong yesterday.

Their superior batting won them the championship game, taking a 4-0 lead after the fourth inning. Black Arrow would claw back to 4-1 in the fifth inning but PLK Zombies would go on to score three runs in the next inning.

With the scores at 7-1 heading into the final inning, it would require a comeback of epic proportions for Black Arrow to turn the tides but it was something they never looked likely of though they did manage to score again in the last inning.

One of the Black Arrow's best players was national pitcher Mahdani Yakub who struck out nine players a big deal for any pitcher.

For PLK Zombies, it was their second championship in the space of a month, winning the 2009 President's Cup earlier this month after beating Gunners 9-8 in the final.

"Our batting was great today (Sunday) and I think both teams played very well. Congratulations to Black Arrow for putting up a good fight," said Ak Adinordey Pg Hj Zaluyi, the club's secretary.

"We were back to practice just a few days after our President's Cup win and we trained hard for this tournament.

"We did not have any special strategy or tactic, we just went out there giving our best and playing with our regular line-up," he added.

Meanwhile in the women's division, a team from the Philippines, Legends, won the competition after beating an Indonesian team, Rebels, 4-0 in the final.

Kensei and Chikara won third in the men's and women's division respectively.

PLK Zombies won USD$2,000, a trophy and medals for emerging as champions. Black Arrow won USD$1,000, a trophy and medals while Kensei won USD$700, a trophy and medals.

Legends won USD$1,500, a trophy and medals, Rebels won USD$700, a trophy and medals and Chikara won USD500, a trophy and medals.

Other competing teams in the men's division were Banzai, SkyHawk (Malaysia) and Wanderers while the other competing teams in the women's division were Comets, Red Arrow and 2009 President's Cup women's champions Pasadena.

The medals were awarded by Pg Hj Jambol Pg Hj Sulaiman, the vice-president of Brunei Amateur Softball and Baseball Association (Basba), with the trophy and cheques awarded later in the day during a ceremony in Gadong.

The tournament, which will run till June 28, is co-organised by the Chikara and Kensei softball teams.

Aside from local teams, also competing are teams from the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

The aims of the tournament were to build camaraderie amongst the players especially with the foreign players and also to strengthen and promote the softball sport in the country.

"There are several players in the foreign teams who are representatives of their country," said an official from the organising committee.

"This will also help in developing the skills of the local players who are playing in the tournament," added the official.

Other competing teams in the men's division are Black Arrow, Wanderers, Zombies and SkyHawk (Malaysia).

Participating in the women's division are Chikara, Comets, Red Arrow, Pasadena, Legends (Philippines) and Rebels (Indonesia).

Each team consists 20 players. Both the men's and women's games will be played in the round robin format with games to be played with five innings complete or two hours. Each win will give three points, a point for a draw and zero for a loss.

The second stage of the tournament will be played in the Page System with seven innings.

The top four teams will advance into the knock out stages where the winners will advance to the championship round on June 28.
